What do you get when you combine adorable Trolls, a hilarious cast, a boogie-down soundtrack and a bright & beautiful movie experience?
Well you get the latest film from DreamWorks Animation, Trolls.
I had the recent pleasure of attending an advance screening and press day for Sassy Mama in LA. You should definitely go read seven fun facts from the cast and crew that I put together for Yolanda. It was quite the fun time. Not to mention getting to meet Justin Timberlake (Branch), Anna Kendrick (Poppy), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (King Gristle) and Kunal Nayyar (Guy Diamond) was alright. I guess.
I thought I should take a minute over here to convince you why you need to see Trolls…if you haven’t already.
1. The music. Duh.
In addition to the catchy original track, “Can’t Stop the Feeling”, executive music producer, Justin Timberlake, breathed new life into some classic tracks like “September” and “The Sound of Silence” to the Trolls soundtrack. The new again tracks are the perfect addition to the storytelling of the film. They add that little oomph of impact.
If there hadn’t been any other incredible things for me to do at the press event, I’d have likely planted myself in a bean bag chair in the themed music room to listen to the soundtrack on infinite loop.
2. The production design is top notch.
One of the coolest bits of the film are the scrapbook pages you’ll see when Poppy (Kendrick) is narrating bits of the story. All of those scenes were designed using real life felt and baubles. I had the chance to see them first hand in the super cool scrapbooking room on the press floor.
Beyond the thrill of seeing these pieces in the felt was having the chance to chat with production designer for the film, Kendal Cronkhite, for an excessive amount of time. She was fabulous, sweet and oh so creative. Talk about a dream gig. She oversaw all of the very finite details of the look of the film. From the characters to the environments, one of the goals was to make the film feel textured.
They really nailed bringing that to life.
I also hear you have to see it in 3D. Because there’s farting glitter and…you just need to.
3. The movie grows up with your kids.
One of the questions I was able to ask the cast was how it felt to be slightly irreverent and innuendoed with the jokes. Justin said it “felt like they were getting away with something” while Anna agreed adding:
“I mean, one of my favorite feelings is as an adult when you go, ‘Oh my God, in Clueless, they’re talking about his penis. Oh my God. They’re talking about balls but they mean balls.’ So, that is a very specific example. But I think that speaks to the idea that you want to layer a film so that anyone from any age can enjoy it and also so that kids can grow with it. And that it is like planting things and they will get more and more enjoyment out of it as they grow up with it.”
4. The perfect balance of hope and reality.
Branch (Timberlake) and Poppy (Kendrick) are the truly perfect balance of optimism and pessimism. Poppy operates on hope (There’s a very poignant line that speaks directly to this and I’ll be damned, you will definitely get a bit choked up. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.) as opposed to the potential or negative possibility about the fate of her fellow Trolls. Branch, on the other hand, has diligently prepared for the Bergen invasion and certainly cannot be bothered to sing. No thank you. Until he does…and you’ll get choked up again. I promise you that.
5. It’s the perfect dose of happy.
There’s really no comparing the level of pure happiness you’ll walk out of the theater wearing brightly on your face. Whether it’s the farting-glitter, the irreverent humor, the catchy sing-alongs or the empowering message of confidence, your heart will smile for the rest of who knows how long. And if you ask me, that’s a very, very good thing.
